Think Before You Speak Free Printable Poster

"Be careful what you say. You can say something hurtful in ten seconds, but ten years later, the wounds are still there."

-Joel Osteen, American Pastor

When we are feeling impatient, we don’t stop to think of the long-term ramifications of our words. I know I am guilty of speaking without really thinking, and once mean words escape my mouth, they can’t be unsaid.

Words have the power and energy to inspire and lift. And words have the power to cut and deflate. Words spoken by adults, teachers, and children all matter to heal our world, help everyone feel valued, and create a positive learning environment.

Our Think Acronym Poster is a helpful free printable to remind you and your students to take a moment to assess what you are about to say. Is it going to lift or deflate, benefit or harm?

THINK

T - Is it True?

Even if something is true, it might not be uplifting nor even necessary to say.

“...But the human tongue is a beast that few can master. It strains constantly to break out of its cage, and if it is not tamed, it will run wild and cause you grief."
-Unknown

H - Is it Helpful?

Why are you going to say something that might not be helpful in an uplifting way? People respond better to positive words than negative ones.

"Don't ever diminish the power of words. Words move hearts and hearts move limbs."

-Hamza Yusuf, American Islamic Scholar

I - Is it Inspiring?

Will the person be inspired to do better and be better with the words you speak?

"Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless."

-Mother Teresa, Catholic Saint

N - Is it Necessary?

Speaking positive words of encouragement is always necessary.

"Good words are worth much, and cost little."

-George Herbert, 17th Century Poet

K - Is it Kind?

Remember the golden rule. Would you want someone to say it to you?

"The tongue has no bones but is strong enough to break a heart. So be careful with your words."

"Words are seeds that do more than blow around. They land in our hearts and not the ground. Be careful what you plant and careful what you say. You might have to eat what you planted one day."
