Missing Vowel Printable Worksheet
Our ears naturally pick up the harsh sounds of consonants especially at the beginning and the end of a word. Vowel sounds in words, however, can be tricky to hear and learn for beginning readers/writers.
As a child, I struggled with the difference between short vowel sounds and long vowel sounds. Most consonants had the same sound. B was bbbbb. T was ttttt. But vowels took on different sounds. An A in a middle of a word could be aaaaa or ahhhh. O could be ohhh, ooaaa, or oowww. It was very confusing for my young mind, and I often reverted to guessing.
It wasn’t until I was an adult helping my children learn to read that I began to understand the vowel sound patterns. If the word contained a consonant, vowel, consonant (CVC) pattern then the vowel sound was slightly different then its name. A is ahhh in CVC words like bat, cat, hat.
A is its long sound aaaaa in words with an e on the end like rake, bake, late or in words with another vowel in the middle with a CVVC pattern like pain, main, rain. Once I figured these patterns out, my spelling improved tremendously.
I am a bit embarrassed to admit it, but sometimes I still find myself reviewing the sound to determine the correct spelling of words like loss, lose, and loose.
